Galapagos Forest Initiative
This reserve will have an interpretive center, which will provide visitors with information about the tortoises, along with interpretive trails.
The Galapagos Forest Initiative will also reforest the reserve with the important Scalesia tree - a genus of 15 species of trees and shrubs found only on the Galapagos Islands that provides biodiverse habitats for many animals and birds, and especially the giant tortoises.
Galapagos Forest Initiative
The Galapagos Islands get their namesake from the Galapagos Giant Tortoise, and these majestic animals are the most symbolic of all the island's wildlife. The pressing need to conserve their habitat is one of the many important and sustainable actions we can take to protect the giant tortoises and the island's flora and fauna.
Galapagos Tortoises were on the brink of extinction a few years ago. Thankfully, their numbers have increased due to both individual and organizational efforts. However, they are still considered an endangered species.
Fortunately, a reserve in the Santa Cruz highlands, on the Isla of Santa Cruz, called the Galapagos Magic Camp, is stewarding an exceptional habitat project for the tortoises called the Galapagos Forest Initiative. The initiative aims to create a sustainable reserve for the Giant Tortoises by expanding their habitat with ponds designed to provide shade and a safe place for rest.
WHAT WE NEED
The initiative is currently in Phase One. Building the interpretive center, trails, and ponds and beginning the reforestation projects in Phase One will cost $10,000.
We invite you to join us in completing phase one of our Galapagos Forest Initiative! Help us build the interpretation center, the interpretative trails, the water pond for the tortoises and reforest the reserve.
