Community tourism in Vicos offers travelers one of the most enriching experiences. Nestled within the Cordillera Blanca, the highest and most majestic range of the Andes Mountains, the community is steeped in culture and local traditions.
Crooked Trails co-founder Tammy Leland visited Vicos in 1999 and met with The Mountain Institute (TMI) when they were working in Vicos to create a community homestay project. She met Pablo Tadeo Cilio, then a guide for TMI, and created a lifelong friendship. Pablo visited Tammy when he came to Seattle in the mid-2000s.
She brought a Crooked Trails group to Vicos in 2002 and partnered with TMI to map the boundaries of Vicos. The project resulted in a cultural map for tourists to visit local artisans and community members and also protects land titles and ownership. These maps are still used today.
Pablo and his family and several other community members share their daily lives with you. Visitors have the opportunity to cook with the families, work in the fields, visit the schools, work with artisans, and embark on hikes and treks beneath the towering presence of Huascaran, Peru’s highest peak, reaching an astounding 22,205 feet in elevation.
