La Feria del Hongo Silvestre Mushroom Festival Oaxaca

La Feria del Hongo Silvestre Mushroom Festival OaxacaThe summer rainy season in Oaxaca’s Sierra Norte region drapes the breathtaking mountain landscape in passing misty shrouds. This magical time is when the mushrooms pop, dotting the forests with over 340 different varieties. It’s no coincidence that the Feria de los Hongos Silvestres, or the Wild Mushroom Festival, happens in July during prime mushroom time!

This year, you can join us as we journey into Oaxaca’s Zapotec mountain communities to learn about the cultural, medicinal and gastronomical importance that mushrooms hold for the local people. The trip dates are July 12 – 18.

Back at the festival, we can admire the mushroom bounty and learn from expert mycologists. And then, of course, we’ll EAT! Enjoy hongos in traditional dishes like moles, empanadas and quesadillas, prepared with locally foraged herbs, or even pickled and marinated. It is a magical time to be in Oaxaca, as the city comes alive and the pride and energy of the community are palpable. As an extra bonus, we’ll learn about and enjoy the local liquor of the land at the Mezcal Festival in the evening.

We’re excited about this program because has a ton to offer: the chance to connect with and support locals, immersion in living traditional culture, hiking in a truly spectacular setting, and the food!
