For 2013, Co-founder Chris Mackay is creating an exciting new itinerary focused around our work supporting Maiti Nepal, an NGO working to combat child sexual slavery. I caught up with her this week to learn a bit about what she’s putting together.

Tell me a bit about what you are planning for your 2013 Founder-led Travel Program. Where will you be bringing travelers this year, and when do you plan to go?

I will be returning to Nepal to work with Maiti Nepal and bring a group of travelers to visit the prevention schools Maiti Nepal has established. I am expecting to run the trip over the Thanksgiving time frame. We will have several extension options, including a homestay at Chandeni village where we have done school building and water system development projects, or to go trekking to Everest basecamp.

What is the specific focus of your trip?
Looking at the fight against child sexual slavery in the field. This is beyond rescue… this is prevention.

chris with host family in NepalWhat are a few highlights on the itinerary?
Trekking into remote villages where tourists simply don’t go. This will be intimate and meaningful.

What makes this program unique?
Being able to visit these prevention schools is very special as they are what Anuradha (founder of Maiti Nepal) feels is most important right now in the fight against human trafficking in Nepal.

Who might be most interested to join your founder-led group?
People who are looking for a trip with deep meaning and off the beaten path. People also have to be willing to rough it while in the villages and need to be sensitive to the issues. We will also ask all participants to give back by returning home and presenting what they learned to friends or colleagues to raise awareness and hopefully funds for Maiti Nepal.

Chris is working out the final details for her 2013 Founder-led Nepal Program now and we hope to open up applications soon. In the meantime, send an email to angela (at) crookedtrails (dot) org to sign up for the advance interest list.
